From the Executive Director

Darrin Drollinger Headshot
President Dana Porter, President-Elect Doug Otto, and I participated in the Agricultural Equipment Technology Conference (AETC) which returned to Louisville this year. It was a great meeting with lots of excellent content and networking. Congratulations to planning committee chair Mike Sama and the team on this extremely well-done event. A highlight for me was the participation by the 28 undergrad and graduate students. Also, it's always fun to spend time at the farm show and see what is new on the market. Dana and I toured the show floor and paid extra attention to the exhibits showcasing their AE50 recognition.

I am very pleased to extend a warm welcome to the newest staff member, Liz Metts. Hired into the Director of Development position, Liz brings with her a proven track record involving many aspects of fundraising and grant writing abilities, and she has extensive experience in relationship cultivation. She has spent the last several years putting her talents to work at Opportunity Enterprises in Valparaiso, Indiana. I am positive Liz is just the person to transition current philanthropic efforts into a first-rate donor engagement program, while lifting the awareness of our profession to the next level. The Director of Development is a joint effort between the Foundation and the Society to expand and strengthen ASABE initiatives.

ASABE on the National Mall

May 6, 2024

ASABE has announced plans to participate in the Celebration of Modern Ag on the National Mall, hosted by the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).

"Our participation will provide a national stage to share about the exciting work we have going on in areas like standards, AMAA, and CBSI," says ASABE Executive Director Darrin Drollinger.

This year's theme, "Sustainable Supply Chain," highlights the benefits of today's agricultural equipment technology and the accomplishments of producers, agri-business, processors, and retailers. “Showcasing the sustainability of our food system on the National Mall is an unparalleled opportunity to influence regulations and legislation,” says AEM's Curt Blades.

How do you fix a problem when you don't even know it exists? Sometimes we have to be willing to get a little uncomfortable, and Emmanual Acho, sports analyst, former NFL linebacker, and best-selling author and speaker, aims to be the friend to help us do that. "My arms are open wide," he writes, "and my heart, too."

Acho's engaging book, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man, is the subject of the upcoming ASABE Book Club, jointly hosted this month by our BIPOC and Young Professionals communities in a celebration of Black History Month.

Learn details and plan to join us.

Give Us Your Take on ASABE Technical Committees

Participation in tech committees is a valuable way of staying informed of current and emerging technologies. It also offers great networking opportunities with professionals across ASABE's wide technical scope. The Young Professionals Community's subcommittee on technical committee involvement aims to help young professionals leverage those benefits by encouraging participation at the early stages of their careers.

The subcommittee requests your help in their work! Please take this short, 1-minute survey on your interest in technical committees.

In Memoriam

James L. Fouss

Photo of Jim FoussASABE Fellow James L. Fouss, P.E., PhD, passed away on February 12, 2024. He was 87 years old.

Fouss was born in Coshocton County, Ohio, and grew up on his family’s dairy and truck-crop farm near Lowell, Ohio. He attended The Ohio State University, where he obtained bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the Department of Agricultural Engineering.

Fouss enjoyed an accomplished career with the USDA Agricultural Research Service that spanned from 1960 to 2011, holding research positions at ARS offices in Ohio, South Carolina, and  Louisiana. While at The Ohio State University, he designed the corrugated wall HDPE plastic drainage pipe, a floating-beam drainage plow, and the laser-beam automatic depth and grade-control system for plow-in installation of corrugated plastic subsurface drainage pipe. The latter was the first reported use of the laser in agriculture. This modernized material and equipment for installing subsurface drainage had wide-spread adoption and use in the U.S. and throughout the world by the early 1970s. At Florence, he became director of the Coastal Plains Soil and Water Conservation Center, and in Baton Rouge the research leader of the Soil and Water Research Unit until it was closed in 2009. In Houma he was the Lead Scientist for implementing new areas of research for sugarcane production. He left ARS in 1976 to serve as vice president of research and new product development with Hancor, Inc. in Findlay, Ohio, a period he referred to as his 6-year sabbatical leave to industry. He returned to ARS and remained until his retirement in 2011.

Fouss authored more than 160 technical journal articles, bulletins, conference proceedings, and his name was on ten book chapters, sixteen U.S. and two foreign patents, and many other technical reports on corrugated-wall plastic pipe design. Over his career, he received many awards and honors including the USDA Superior Service Silver Medal Award and ASABE's first-ever Young Designer Award, both in 1972. He was inducted as an ASABE Fellow in 1994. Other Society awards include the Soil and Water Engineering Award and the John Deere Gold Medal Award.

A celebration of life will be planned in both Texas and Ohio at a later date, with final burial in Oak Grove Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Heart Association or to The Ohio State University Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering.

Fouss was a 64-year member of the Society.
