Hello ASABE students!
My name is Hudson Schneider and I am a junior at Purdue University studying Biological Engineering. I am excited to serve as the president of the International Student Branch this year. I aim to increase member engagement worldwide by offering exciting events and educational opportunities that foster growth within ISB and ASABE.

One of the ways this will be accomplished is through regular newsletters that provide information about ways to get involved. Additionally, ISB will host virtual events for student chapters to collaborate and share ideas for regional rallies, chapter meetings, and student competitions.
There are so many ways to engage with ASABE and ISB, and we encourage you to take full advantage of them. Stay tuned for upcoming events and opportunities.

About: The Roger R. and Laura M. Yoerger Preprofessional Engineer of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student who has completed a minimum of two years of an undergraduate program of study in the field of agricultural and/or biological engineering. The academic program must be accredited by either ABET or CEAB.
Eligibility: Open to ASABE undergraduate student members.

About: The Student Oral/Poster Presentation Competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who submit an abstract, register to attend, and present at the ASABE Annual International Meeting. Outstanding student presentations, in both oral and poster categories, will be awarded in ASABE's technical communities.
Eligibility: All students who meet the abstract submission deadline for presenting at AIM will be contacted to determine interest in entering the competition. Note: Several technical communities require meeting-paper submission to be eligible for awards.

What motivated you to apply for this award or competition?
I was motivated to apply for the Boyd-Scott Graduate Research Award because it represents a significant recognition of research excellence within the field of agricultural and biological engineering. The award is closely related to my academic research focus on water quality and the innovative application of biochar for environmental management. Moreover, the opportunity to share my work to a community of leading researchers, connect with peers, and receive valuable feedback was also the motivating factor for me to participate in the competition. Having seen my advisor, Dr. Rabin Bhattarai, receive the same award during his PhD journey, it felt like a meaningful and fitting step in my own academic career.
How was the application process?
The application process for this award was rigorous, including a written and an oral competition. I tried my best to present a concise but comprehensive overview of my research during the written phase. For the oral competition, I aimed to deliver a clear, engaging presentation that highlighted the practical applications and broader significance of biochar use in real-world applications, with a particular focus on its benefits for farmers. It took me several weeks of preparation, including refining my presentation slides, designing impactful visuals, and practicing my delivery to ensure I effectively communicated how biochar can improve water quality and sustainability in agriculture. My advisor also played a key role in helping me prepare, providing valuable feedback on how to refine my message and strengthen my presentation.
What was the most impactful thing that you took away from the annual meeting, where the award was presented?
This event felt especially meaningful for me. I feel fortunate to have met a group of professors at this event who truly care about farmers and are deeply invested in finding ways to transfer research into real-world applications and benefit agricultural communities. As an agricultural engineering student, seeing their passion for helping farmers adopt sustainable practices has been both inspiring and motivating. What made that moment even more special was the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions with the award's namesake, Cornell University Professor Norm Scott. These interactions have offered me valuable new perspectives on both myself and my research.
Why would you encourage other students to apply?
I highly recommend that my fellow students participate in this competition. Although the competition is highly competitive, it is incredibly rewarding. This experience offers invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. It was particularly rewarding for both writing and oral presentation skills, providing a platform to refine our ability to communicate complex research. I do believe this is a chance to advance our careers, build meaningful connections, and contribute to solving real-world problems. I really appreciate how ASABE provides such opportunities for us to share our work and engage with the broader research community. |
