From the Executive Director

The goal of the Circular Bioeconomy Systems Institute (CBSI) is to create a more sustainable, resilient, and environmentally friendly bioeconomy sector that not only produces and supplies food and other bioproducts but also regenerates natural resources, minimizes losses and wastes, and mitigates the environmental impacts of bioproduct supply chains. It represents a shift away from the linear "take-make-dispose" model to a more circular and restorative approach. This statement from CBSI interim chair John Reid does a great job summarizing the group’s efforts and now they are encouraging you to join. ASABE members can take part via Engage, non-members can sign-up here, and everyone can join on LinkedIn.

CBSI has been working hard to inspire participation beyond ASABE and an excellent example of this is that the American Society for Horticultural Science will be hosting a free webinar on October 4. CBSI leaders Jim Jones, K.C. Ting, and Brahm Verma will conduct the webinar, which is titled Circular Controlled Environment Agriculture Systems as Circular Bioeconomy Systems.

On a separate subject, I encourage you to read and share the latest Student Newsletter. International Student Branch President Paige Seibert has an energized team of officers and an ambitious mission this year to increase student engagement, improve the regional rallies, and to increase participation in student competitions. It's great to have the students actively back after the challenging pandemic years.

Ballot Proposal Would Add Fifth Council

Following a successful petition presented at the Society’s annual business meeting, held at this year’s annual meeting, a proposal with significant implications for the Society will be included with this year’s leadership ballot.

The proposal would add a fifth council, for strategic initiatives, to ASABE’s organizational structure, which currently includes Membership, Meetings, Standards and Technical, and Publications councils. The purpose of the new council is to promote “initiatives and partnerships that include multiple communities by providing oversight to and periodically evaluating existing initiatives as well as exploring opportunities for new strategic initiatives.”

Watch for details about the proposal to be published in coming months, both in this newsletter and in Resource magazine.

A Vision for ASABE YPC: Building a Bright Future for Young Professionals

Over the past two decades, the Young Professionals Community (YPC) has been a driving force in nurturing the growth and development of young professionals in ASABE. As we gaze into the horizon of the next 20 years, the YPC executive committee envisions a future ripe with opportunities for growth, innovation, and collaboration.

  • One of our foremost objectives is to strengthen international relations with agricultural and biological engineers worldwide. We must foster partnerships and collaborations that transcend borders in an increasingly interconnected global landscape. By doing so, we can create a vast network of professionals united in their dedication to innovation and sustainable solutions. We can pool our collective knowledge and expertise through partnerships with international organizations and professionals to address global challenges in agriculture, engineering, and biological sciences. This international perspective will enrich our careers and open doors to a broader range of opportunities and ideas.
  • To thrive in the ever-evolving fields of agricultural and biological engineering, YPC must stay at the forefront of emerging trends, technologies, and methodologies. The rapid pace of change demands that we remain adaptable and committed to continuous learning and professional development. We should focus on providing our members access to the latest knowledge, tools, and resources in the coming years. This includes organizing workshops, webinars, and conferences that cover cutting-edge topics. By equipping young professionals with the skills and insights needed to navigate a dynamic landscape, we empower them to contribute meaningfully to their respective fields and ASABE's mission.
  • YPC possesses the power to cultivate a culture of giving back. We should encourage and empower young professionals to identify their passions and interests, establish meaningful connections, and contribute to improving both our professional society and our careers. Imagine a community where mentorship and knowledge-sharing are the norm. YPC members should be inspired to mentor their peers, share their experiences, and actively participate in the growth of the next generation of professionals. By fostering this culture, we strengthen our bonds within YPC and contribute to the overall growth and vibrancy of ASABE.

As we look ahead to the next 20 years, YPC's vision is clear: to build a brighter and more promising future for young professionals within ASABE. We can pave the way for a thriving community of young engineers and scientists through global partnerships, a commitment to staying ahead of industry trends, and a culture of giving back.

Join us as we work together with a shared vision and determination. Together, we can shape a future where young professionals in ASABE succeed, lead, innovate, and inspire. The future is filled with possibilities

NIST Seeks Input on Technical Standards

The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) is seeking information on behalf of the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Government to support the development of an implementation plan for the United States Government National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technology (USG NSSCET).

The intent of the plan is to promote innovation and national security without disrupting business operations. They aim to strike a balance between government involvement and a private sector-led international standards system while addressing a wide range of technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, blockchain and clean energy, through coordinated efforts and public input.

Comments may be submitted until November 6.
