Adopted August 2019
The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers believes that research and development (R&D), education, and practice are critical to providing solutions related to agricultural and biological systems. These solutions are necessary for meeting the needs of a growing human population with reduced impact on ecological communities and the environment. In particular, the technical scope of R&D, education, and practice activities are those commonly documented in ASABE activities, such as scientific publications, technical standards, and the ASABE Annual International Meeting and include, but are not limited to:
- Food safety, food security, and nutrition.
- Environmentally sustainable and economically feasible best practices that maintain or improve resource quantity and quality in water, air, and land.
- Advanced technological solutions including machinery, electronics, and information to maximize production and efficiency of agricultural and biological systems.
- The nexus of food, energy, and water and opportunities for alternative energy solutions.
- Preparing and maintaining a workforce capable of addressing these problems through facilitating timely and lifelong learning and training.
To support our profession, ASABE’s Public Policy goals are to:
- Provide timely technical information to legislators, government agencies, standards-development organizations, institutions, and regulatory bodies to ensure adequate consideration of science and technology in legislation, regulations, and best practices related to agricultural and biological engineering.
- Provide unbiased information and a forum that supports discussion on priorities for research, development, education, and practice related to agricultural and biological engineering.
- Raise awareness of the need for support in training of students and practitioners in agricultural and biological engineering through experiential opportunities including fellowships, internships, research, extension, outreach, and engagement.
- Support education, training, and public awareness on the adoption of optimum practices to protect natural resources, ensure safety of workers and the public, and enable security of food, energy, and water.
